Do you need a new roofer or a repair
Make sure you choose a reputable roofing contractor!
1. Ask how long they have been in business and in particular in your city/town.
There are some companies that come into an city/town for short term job opportunities and unfortunately if the consumer has problems, they may not be working in the area to provide the follow up. Look for a contractor that has at minimum 2 years of work history in your area. In order to be a member of our Association, a contractor must have been in business in the province of Alberta for a minimum of 5 years and many of our members have been in business for more than 10 years.
2. Make sure they have the following credentials
- Area business license
- Workman's compensation & Liability Insurance
These two insurances are extremely important because they not only cover the worker but they protect you as the consumer. If a company does not have these two insurances, you as a consumer could potentially become liable if there was an workplace accident on your job.
All of our members must have these credentials and be able to provide proof to the consumer and the Association upon request.
3. Ask the roofing contractor, who is going to be doing the work on your job, their company or a sub-contractor. Also who is ultimately responsible for the installation.
This is important to understand because you want to make sure that the company you sign the contract with will be responsible for the workmanship.
4. Ask if there are any cancellation clauses in the contract and be sure to understand what they are and how they are applied.
In some cases, consumers are offered a free service to assist them with insurance claims but unfortunately if the consumer is not successful in getting the insurance on the job or chooses another roofer to complete the work, the company that assisted the consumer with the claim may charge a cancellation fee.
Some companies may charge an estimating fee but many will apply the fee to the job if they are successful in getting the job.
5. Any company in the province of Alberta that is soliciting work away from their business offices should have a "Pre-paid Contractors License" which is issued by the Province of Alberta. If a roofer knocks on your door and suggests that you need a new roof and asks for money at that time to finalize the contract, be sure to ask for the Pre-Paid Contracto License.
6. Clarify the warranties that apply to your job.
There are workmanship warranties which are provided by the contractor and typically run from 1 year to 5 years. This warranty covers the installation. There will also be a material warranty which is offered by tne manufacturer of the products and those warranties vary depending on the products being installed.
